It can be tough to parent teens.

Some kids seem to have it all together, while still so many others struggle each day to find their way and make good choices. As parents and caregivers, it’s our role to provide guidance and love, set a good example, set boundaries, and at the same time give them space to learn and grow. As parents, we can and should work together to help coach and guide our kids.

In middle childhood and adolescence, children focus on defining who they are and what their place in the world will be. They struggle to align their own internal drives with their changing sense of capabilities, and the situations and opportunities that they face or will face. They are most concerned with being accepted by their peers, and they evaluate themselves in comparison to others. These stages are also marked by a strong push for independence and making their own decisions regarding their behavior.

Adolescents are developing a sense of moral self-worth. They become more reflective and make ties between what they think and feel and how they behave. They may struggle with self-esteem and their sense of identity. They may face crises in their growing realization that they need to find their place in the world. Working through these crises can lead to increased sense of self-worth and self-confidence or result in emotional disorders like anxiety or depression when they feel overwhelmed with the thought of the challenges of life.

Parents, caregivers and teachers must create a positive environment where children feel safe to test their developing skills and competencies. When caregivers encourage children to reach toward higher goals and competencies, they signal to the child that they are capable of succeeding. By creating a positive, encouraging atmosphere, parents, caregivers and educators foster positive social and emotional development. When adolescents succeed in overcoming challenges and solving problems, they gain a sense of self-confidence and competence that they are capable.

The resources below are guides to help you and your children through these challenging stages of life!
